Under Warranty?

Posted February 4th, 2010 by melissa

By now most of you have had a chance to pull out your eBeam System after the Holiday break and scrapbook away.  Now would be a good time for you, technology coordinators, to check-in with your teachers and see if they need any additional accessories or service on any damaged hardware.  What kind of warranty does eBeam offer?  Luidia offers a two-year manufacturer warranty on the eBeam receiver, stylus and whiteboard pens.

How do you know if your damaged stylus is under warranty?  Locate the serial number on the eBeam receiver that coordinates with the stylus in question (there is no serial number on the actual pen) and email  that number to your local eBeam representative.  They can check to see if your eBeam part is still under warranty and give further instructions on repairing your system.  We even take care of the shipping for you, so there is no cost on your end to get a replacement part.  Now that’s service.

Is Your Cable in the Way?

Posted November 6th, 2009 by melissa

Every classroom is set up differently.  You may be using a laptop or a desktop computer.  Your projector may be ceiling mounted or on a rolling cart.  And that 15′ USB cable that cameimagephp1 with your eBeam might not be long enough, especially if your desktop computer is in the back of the room.  Double the length of your USB cable  to 31′ by using our 16′ 2.0 USB Extension Cable for only $24.95.  You can daisy chain several of these extension cables together for a total of 80′ without signal degradation.  This 16′ extension cable features a signal repeater at one end to ensure your eBeam still functions properly.

If you take your eBeam System on the go, you will want to stock up on this extension cable for a backup.  That way you are always sure your USB cable will stay out of your way as you make your presentation with your eBeam Portable System.  Run the extension cable around the edge of the room so that the presenter’s space at the front of the room stays clear and open.  Plug the mini-USB end of your USB cable into the eBeam receiver as usual.  Plug the USB connection into the USB extension cable and connect the extension cable to your computer.   This is an affordable alternative to the eBeam Bluetooth System, which has no cables connected from the eBeam to the computer.

Stimulus Funds for Education

Posted October 26th, 2009 by melissa

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provides more than $100 billion for education and education programs.  The goal of the ARRA 2009 is to improve student achievement through school improvement and reform.  The eBeam is the perfect candidate for these funds because of its affordable cost and flexible integration.  The eBeam can qualify for the stimulus funds in everything from school modernization to teacher assessment.  For more information on the types of funds available and their timelines, visit Luidia’s website.

Can’t connect through Bluetooth?

Posted October 15th, 2009 by melissa

If you are using the Mac version of Interact 1.3.1 or 1.3.2 and are having difficulties connecting through Bluetooth, you may need to revert to the prior version of Interact 1.2.  Apple recently released a Bluetooth update that is causing interference with the Bluetooth connection in the latest eBeam software.  Luidia is working on a fix that should be available next month.  In the meantime, you can connect via Bluetooth with an older version of the software or if you want to continue using the latest software (Interact 1.3.2), connect your eBeam directly to your computer with the USB cable.  First you must perform a clean uninstall of any eBeam software on your Mac.

1.) Remove all currently installed eBeam software including the eBeam Interact and eBeam Capture software.  Remove the icons from your dock as well.

2.) Delete any efi, ebeam, and luidia entries in the plist in your user account under the Library/Preferences folder.

3.) Logoff of your user account and logon in the main administrative account.  Under your hard drive, go to System/Library/Extensions folder and delete the USBeBeam.kext file.

4.) Delete all the eBeam Capture/ eBeam Interact/ Install eBeam Capture/ Install eBeam Interact entries found in the hard drive under the Library/Receipts folder.

5.) Empty the Trash folder after removing the files and reboot your Mac.

If you want to connect using Bluetooth, download the Interact 1.2 software  here.  This is an older release so it should detect the BT connection without any problems.

If you want to use the latest software and connect through USB, download the Interact 1.3.2 software here.

After installing the software, you will need to repair your eBeam with the Bluetooth.

Keynote Toolbar

Posted October 6th, 2009 by melissa

Along with the PowerPoint toolbar, the Interact 1.3.1 software for Mac has an integrated Keynote toolbar.  During a Keynote presentation, the eBeam toolbar (shaped as a wheel) allows you to annotate over your Keynote slides and save your annotations to Scrapbook.  Before opening a Keynote presentation with eBeam Interact, you must first set a few Keynote preferences.

From within Keynote, select Preferences from the Keynote menu.  From the General Preferences dialog box, select Slideshow.  Set the following two preferences:

  • If available, select Allow Exposé, Dashboard and others to use screen.
  • Select show pointer when the mouse moves.

You are now ready to begin using your Keynote Toolbar with eBeam!

Firmware Update

Posted September 22nd, 2009 by melissa

For all existing eBeam Edge users, you can now use the whiteboard feature as well as the projection feature.  To do so, you must first update your eBeam Edge receiver with the latest firmware version 6.00.5.  To update your firmware, click here.  The Edge receiver must be connected to your computer via USB cable to update the firmware.  The firmware must be updated before you can use your dry-erase marker sleeves with the Capture software.  All Edge units purchased after September 2009 will ship with the latest firmware.

The Edge

Posted September 8th, 2009 by melissa

imagephpThis summer, Luidia the manufacturer of eBeam, launched the new eBeam Edge which is the world’s smallest interactive whiteboard solution. Weighing less than 4 oz., the eBeam Edge can be placed on any “edge” of the board (the left edge works the best). The new sleek design of the eBeam is very impressive and since the new receiver is white, it virtually blends right into the whiteboard. The new hardware and firmware has been upgraded to allow for no lag time between pen and pixel. There is a new calibration button built-in to the eBeam receiver. Teachers can instantly pull up the calibration screen with just a touch of the button without having to use the eBeam toolbar. The Edge brags the largest active area in the market with a 5′ x 9′ projected image (123″ diagonal).

The Edge has integrated receiver magnets which allow the user to pop the eBeam on and off of a magnetic board as needed. If you are using a non-magnetic whiteboard, the included stainless steel mounting plates with 3M double sided sticky tape allow for a secure attachment of the eBeam to the dry-erase surface. The eBeam Edge comes with a new projection stylus! The new stylus is a slimmer design that is more ergonomic for the every-day eBeam user. It still has 3 buttons: left click, right click and eBeam toolbar access. The tip of the new stylus is more pointed than the rounded tip of the eBeam System 3. The Edge Stylus uses 1 AAA battery while the System 3 stylus uses 1 AA battery. While the overall package price of the Edge is higher than the System 3, you’ll be glad to know the replacement price of the new stylus is $44.95 as compared to the $134.95 of the System 3.

The Edge works with the new Interact 2.2.2 and Capture 2.2.2 software for PC and works with the Interact 1.3.1 for Mac. The Capture feature for Mac will be coming soon for the Edge! The Edge is available in USB only; a Bluetooth version will be available closer to the end of the year.
